Vat Savitri is a major Hindu festival which is celebrated by married Hindu women in India. This festival is dedicated to Goddess Savitri,who is considered to be the ideal wife in Hindu mythology. The story of Savitri and Satyavan is a popular legend associated with this festival.

Vat Savitri falls on amavasya thiti ( new moon day) during the dark phase of moon in the month of May- June , according to Hindu calender, and therefore it is also known as Vat amavasya.
This puja holds immense significance among Hindu married women,who keep fast on this special day to ensure the well-being and longevity of their husbands .
This festival is based on the legendary story of Savitri and Satyavan. The festival teaches us the power of devotion, strength of determination and importance of love and commitment.

Story
According to the legend of Savitri and Satyavan, in Hindu scriptures, there is a story about Savitri,who married a named Satyavan. Unfortunately, Satyavan had a short life span. Savitri’s husband Satyavan was destined to die within a year of their marriage.One day , while he was working in the forest, the Lord of death, Yamraj came to claim his life.
Savitri being a devoted wife found her lifeless husband,she saw Yamraj and pleaded for her husband’s life back but Yamraj refused.
Then, Savitri followed Yamraj,the God of death and managed to win back her husband’s life through her intelligence and determination.

Rituals
The rituals involved as:
Women wake up early morning,bathe, wearing jwellery and traditional outfits and prepare satvik food. Special dishes are prepared for the occasion and families come together to celebrate the festival with joy and enthusiasm.
Carrying a sacred white yarn,a kalash filled with water,turmeric, vermilion and flowers,they visit a temple where the revered Vat Vriksha stands. They worship the Vat Vriksha and tie threads around its trunk while reciting prayers and perform rituals.
Lighting a ghee lamp ,they offer prayers for their husband’s well-being. Women encircle the tree seven times and tie the white threads around it . This tree symbolizes longevity and strength in Hindu culture.
So, Vat Savitri puja is not just a religious ritual but also a celebration of love, devotion and the bond between husband and wife.
This festival is a significant festival that honors the spirit of love and devotion in marriage.
It brings families together and reinforce the values of loyalty, commitment and sacrifice in relationship.
