Nowadays in this fast-pace world, a lot of people are suffering from back pain. A slipped disc also known as a herniated or bulging disc, occurs when the soft tissue between the vertebrae in the spine produces out of its normal position. This condition can lead to significant pain, discomfort and difficulty in flexibility. It occurs when the soft cushion between spinal bones pushes out and irritates nearby nerves. While medication and rest may help initially, the right exercises play a major role in long-term recovery and pain management.

Exercises improve flexibility, strengthens supporting muscles, reduces pressure on the spine and helps prevent future injuries. However, not every workout is safe for slipped discs. Gentle, control movements are essential.

So , there are some exercises which can help alleviate pain , symptoms, strengthen surrounding muscles and improve overall spinal health.

Here, I am trying my best to explore five exercises that can aid in managing a slipped disc, emphasizing their benefits and proper techniques.

  1. Pelvic tilts- Pelvic tilts are fundamental exercises that can help strengthen the lower back and abdominal muscles while promoting flexibility in the spine.

How to do it

Lie on your back with your knees bent and feet flat on the floor,hip-width apart.

Gently tighten your abdominal muscles and flatten your lower back against the floor.

Hold this position for a few seconds while breathing deeply.

Release and return to the starting position. Repeat this exercise for 10-15 times.

Pelvic tilt

Benefits – Pelvic tilts help stabilize the lumbar region of the spine, reducing pressure on the discs. By strengthening the core muscles, this exercise can enhance spinal support and promote better posture.

2)  Knee- to chest stretch – This knee – to chest stretch is a good exercise for improving flexibility and relieving pressure in the lower back.

How to perform

Lie on your back with your legs extended.

Slowly bring one knee towards your chest, holding it both hands.

Keep the other leg straight on the floor.

Hold the position for 15-30 seconds. Perform this exercise 2- 3 times each side.

Importance of Posture and Consistency

Exercise is not enough. Good posture, while sitting, standing and sleeping is equally important. Use supportive chairs , avoid sitting for long hours and maintain a healthy body weight to reduce spinal stress.

Consistency matters more than intensity. Gentle daily movement often gives better results than occasional heavy workouts.
