Behaviour and emotional disorders in children are multifaceted and complex topics that can significantly impact the child ‘s overall well-being academic performance and social interaction.
These disorders can be genetic factors, brain chemistry, environmental influences and traumatic experiences can all contribute to the development of these disorders.
Here, I try my best to explain some complications of behaviour and emotional disorders in children.
Untreated behavioural and emotional disorders in children can lead to a range of adverse outcomes and complications including the following:
- Educational difficulties – children with these disorders may struggle to maintain focus, complete assessments and engage with their peers and educators which can contribute to academic under achievement, social isolation and poor educational outcomes.

2) Psychiatric problems – untreated behavioural and emotional disorders can lead to the development of concurrent psychiatric conditions such as substance abuse, suicidal thoughts or self harming behaviours.

3) Legal problems – children with these disorders may be at heightened risk of engaging in illegal or criminal activities such as theft, violence or property damage.
4) Depressive disorders – children with depressive disorders may display persistent feelings of sadness, hopelessness along with changes in appetite, sleep patterns and energy levels.

5) Conduct disorders – children with conduct disorders may engage in anti-social or aggressive behaviour such as physical altercations , theft, vandalism or deceitfed actions.

6) Psychological distress – children with these disorders may experiences significant levels of stress, anxiousness or depression which can contribute to poor mental health, emotional dysregulation and impaired quality of life.

7) Oppositional Defiant disorder ( ODD) – children with ODD may display persistent anger, irritability or defiance, leading to heated arguments or deliberate antagonism toward others.
8) Anxiety disorder – children with anxiety disorders may experience persistent worry, fear or apprehension which can manifest in physical symptoms such as sweating, rapid heartbeat or stomaches.

So, behavioural and emotional disorders in children are complex and multifaceted conditions that can significantly impact a child’s cognition, emotional and behavioral functioning.
