Mental health issues often go unnoticed until they create major disruptions in one’s personal or professional life. Delusional Disorder – a complex and often misunderstood mental illness. It is characterized by a combination of hallucinations and disorganised thinking, delusional disorder primarily revolves around one persistent, unshakable belief that is not grounded in reality.

What is Delusional Disorder?

Delusional Disorder is a psychiatric condition where an individual strongly believes in something false, despite clear evidence to the contrary. These delusions are not just fleeting thoughts; they are deeply held convictions that can dominate a person’s perception of reality.

For instance, someone may firmly believe that they are constantly being followed, loved by a famous person or that others are conspiring against them – even no evidence supports these ideas.

Types of Delusional Disorder

This disorder is classified into several subtypes depending on the nature of the delusion:

  1. Erotomanic type –  the belief that someone, usually of higher status or a stranger,is deeply love with them.
  2. Grandiose type – The conviction that they possess special talents, wealth or power far greater than reality.

False belief

3) Jealous type- The false belief that their partner is unfaithful.

4) Persecutory type – the feeling of being mistreated, spied on or conspired against.

5) Somatic type – The belief of having a physical defect, illness or infestation despite medical reassurance.

6) Mixed type – A combination of two or more delusional themes.

Causes and Risk factors

The exact cause of Delusional Disorder is unknown, but research suggests a combination of:-

  1. Genetics – A family history of psychotic disorders increase vulnerability.
  2. Neurological factors – Imbalances in neurotransmitters may contribute.

  4. Personality traits – Individuals with suspicious, sensitive or rigid thinking patterns are more prone.

    Symptoms and Diagnosis

The hallmark symptom is the presence of one or more non- bizarre delusions lasting atleast one month. Unlike hallucinations or incoherent speech seen in schizophrenia, people with delusional disorder often appear normal when not discussing their delusion. However, their relationships ,work and social interactions may suffer due to persistent mistrust or obsession.
