Depression is more than feeling sad or having a difficult day. It is a common but serious mental health condition that can affect mood, thinking, relationships, work, sleep, appetite and overall quality of life. When depression persists and the remains effects gradually become more severe.
Recognising the symptoms early and seeking appropriate personal help can make an important difference in recovery.
Here , I am talking about untreated depression. Just as physical health is important of all, so, mental health is also important. Millions of people around the world suffer from various types of mental illness and mental health problems. Such as anxiety, depression, sadness, obsessive-compulsive disorder, addiction to drugs and alcohol, personality disorder etc.
Mental illness and psychological disorders have good treatment options with medication, Psychotherapy or other treatments.
What is Depression?
Depression, clinically known as a major depressive disorder when specific diagnostic criteria are met, can cause persistent low mood and loss of interest or pleasure in activities that were previously enjoyable.
Depression does not always look the same in everyone.Some people may appear normally at work or at home while experiencing significant emotional distress internally.
It is also important to understand that depression is not a personal weakness or simply a lack of will power. It is a health condition that deserves appropriate assessment and treatment.
Now, I am coming to the point about the side effects of untreated depression.
Understand depression is a serious problem. It increases the chance of risky behaviour such as alcohol or drug addiction.

Clinical depression which is also known as”Major depression ” is an illness that involves the body, mind and thought. It affects the whole behaviour of the person as to how to eat, talk and feel about himself/ herself.
How does untreated clinical depression affect physical health?
A lot of researches and evidence show that people with major depression who are recovery from such as strokes or coronary artery disease or heart attacks have a more difficult time making health care choices.

In major depression cases, sleep will be disturbed. They suffering from insomnia. So, lack of sleep can cause some of the symptoms such as – extremely tiredness, loss of energy, difficulty in making decisions and concentration, So, treating depression help the person get control over all of these symptoms and complications.
What are the common signs of Insomnia with untreated depression?
Symptoms can vary from person to person, but common signs include:
Common signs are:
1) inability and difficulty in concentrating
2) sleep decrease
3) tiredness
4) trouble falling sleep
5) overthinking
6) day time fatigue
7) changes in appetite or weight
8) reduced motivation
9) difficulty concentrating or making decisions
10) feelings of worthlessness ,guilt or hopelessness
When several of these symptoms continue for weeks and interfere with daily life, professional assessment is advisable.
What are the signs of alcohol and drug abuse with untreated depression?

People usually take alcohol and drugs to come out of depression, which is more common among teenagers, young people as well as middle age group. It is very very important to encourage these people to get help because they are more likely to attempt suicide.
Signs of alcohol and drugs abuse are:
1) inability to maintain a personal relationship
2) hiding their feelings
3) self-pity
4) tremors
5) memory loss
So, those who suffer from depression and taking drugs or alcohol may need very specialised treatment. Usually, men who have treated for depression may exhibit more anger, frustration and violent behaviour than women.
So, depression can affect people in their work-life, family life and social life. So, living with a depressed person is very difficult and stressful for the family members, friends and society.

Depression carries a higher risk of suicidal tendencies. Anybody who expresses suicidal thoughts or intentions should be taken very seriously.
Common signs of suicide are:
1) talking, writing, thinking about killing or hurting oneself.
2) having a death wish
3) losing interest in things are used to care about
4) increasing in drinking or using drugs
5) writing a suicidal note

So, depression affects more than 24-25 million people each year, including a large portion of the working population. People with untreated depression can usually get to work, but once, there, they may be irritable, fatigued and have difficulty in concentration, it is difficult to work well for them.
More than 80% of people with clinical depression can be successfully treated with early recognition, intervention and support.
What Can Happen If Depression Is Left Untreated?
Depression can affect several areas of life. Symptoms may persist, recur, and become more difficult to manage, or interfere increasingly with relationships , work and everyday functioning. These are possible associations, not inevitable outcomes, and depression does not cause the same effects in everyone. Some people improve without formal treatment, while others experience substantial impairment for worsening symptoms.
Possible consequences include:
- Declining daily functioning
Depression can make ordinary responsibilities feel overwhelming. Work performance, studies, personal care and household activities may usually become difficult.

2. Social withdrawal
A person experiencing depression may avoid friends, family members or social activities. Over time, isolation can increase feelings of loneliness and hopelessness.
3. Physical health effects
Depression can be associated with sleep disturbances, changes in appetite, reduced physical activity and other physical symptoms. These changes may negatively affect overall wellbeing.
4. Problems with concentration and decision- making
Persistent depression can make it harder to concentrate, remember information or make everyday decisions.
5. Relationship difficulties
Low mood ,irritability, withdrawal and reduced communication may place strain on relationships with family members, friends and colleagues.
6. Increased risk of self-harm or suicide
Severe depression can involve thoughts of death, self-harm or suicide. Any thoughts of suicide or immediate danger require urgent professional help.
When Should You Seek Help?
You don’t have to wait until depression becomes severe before seeking help.
Consider talking to a qualified mental health professional when:
- Symptoms persist or repeatedly return.
- Your mood is interfering with work, relationships or daily activities.
- You have lost interest in most activities.
- Sleep or appetite has changed significantly.
- You feel persistently hopeless, worthless or helpless.
- You are using alcohol or other substances to cope with emotional distress.
- You are experiencing thoughts of self-harm or suicide.
If there are immediate thoughts or plans of suicide or self-harm,seek urgent help from local emergency services, a nearby hospital, or a qualified mental health professional, and don’t remain alone.
Depression is Treatable
One of the most important messages about depression is that help is available. Depending on the individual’s symptoms and circumstances, treatment may involve psychotherapy, medication, lifestyle measures, or a combination of approaches.
A metal health professional can assess the symptoms, consider possible contributing factors and recommend an appropriate treatment plan.
Support from family and trusted friends can also be valuable. However, emotional support should complement- not replace- personal assessment when depression is significant or persistent.
Most people do best with depression treatment using Psychotherapy, medication or a combination of both.
Final Thoughts
Untreated depression should not be ignored. Persistent changes in mood ,sleep, energy, interest, concentration or daily functioning can be signs that professional help is needed.
Early recognition and appropriate treatment can help reduce suffering, restore functioning and support recovery. If you or someone you know is struggling with depression, reaching out for help is a sign of strength,not weakness.
